Making a Difference

News & Star

The 70th anniversary of the NHS saw the News and Star to launch a 70-day campaign celebrating the NHS and say thank you for everything they do.

The campaign told inspiring and exclusive stories. It celebrated the rich history of the NHS in Cumbria and the diversity in today's health services.

The launch week featured the powerful story of Cumbria's first transgender nurse, who agreed to her first interview as part of the anniversary coverage. Rachael Ridley's inspiring story attracted huge support on social media, and her bravery is now helping others to come out without prejudice.

The coverage culminated on 5 July 2018, the official NHS birthday, with a powerful first-person feature by health reporter Pamela McGowan, who coordinated the 70-day campaign.

Having almost lost her dad to a rare flesh-eating bug as a teenager, and seen her little boy undergo major surgery, she had her own reasons to celebrate the NHS. It seemed apt to use the occasion to tell her story for the first time.
